Atletico Madrid Sign Defender Le Normand from Real Sociedad
Atletico Madrid have confirmed the signing of defender Robin Le Normand from Real Sociedad for a reported €35m fee. The 27-year-old center-back has signed a four-year contract through 2028 with Diego Simeone's side, bolstering their defensive options ahead of the new La Liga season.
The France-born Spanish international joins after making 213 appearances for Real Sociedad since his 2016 debut, establishing himself as one of La Liga's most consistent defenders. The move provides Atletico with an experienced left-footed defender to replace the departing Mario Hermoso, while Sociedad cash in on a player entering the final two years of his contract.
Le Normand's acquisition continues Atletico's defensive rebuild following their fourth-place finish last campaign. His aerial dominance and progressive passing range align with Simeone's evolving tactical approach, which increasingly emphasizes building from the back. The defender arrives fresh from starting all four of Spain's matches at Euro 2024.
Real Sociedad will reinvest part of the fee to strengthen their squad after qualifying for the Europa League. Le Normand's departure follows Martin Zubimendi's contract extension, as the Basque club balances squad retention with necessary sales. Atletico's third summer signing after Gabriel Paulista and Javi Guerra is expected to partner Stefan Savic in central defense.
The transfer concludes a rapid rise for Le Normand, who joined Sociedad's youth system from French amateur side Brest in 2016 before becoming a Spain international in 2023. His €35m move represents the second-highest sale in Sociedad's history after Alexander Isak's 2022 departure to Newcastle.
