Barcelona in Talks for Silva as Free Agent, Agent Mendes Drives Talks
Barcelona are in talks to sign Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva on a free transfer this summer, according to reports in Spain. The 32-year-old's contract at the Etihad expires in June, and his agent, Jorge Mendes, has opened discussions with the Catalan club.
According to Sport, Mendes has begun work to convince Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco of the move's merits. Silva is said to have long desired a move to Camp Nou. The Portuguese international, who can play as an attacking midfielder or on the right wing, would be available on a free transfer, a market Barcelona have exploited in recent years.
However, the deal is not straightforward. Barcelona have significant reservations about the move. At 32, Silva does not fit the club's long-term sporting project, and his high salary demands would pose a major challenge for a club still navigating La Liga's strict financial controls. The club is currently working to return to the 1:1 spending rule and would need to create significant salary space.
Furthermore, the club's sporting department reportedly questions the need for a player in Silva's position. The squad is already well-stocked in his preferred roles, with Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, and Lamine Yamal competing for places in advanced areas, while the deeper midfield and forward lines are also well-stocked with Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and Gavi. His arrival could block the pathway for highly-rated youth prospects.
Despite the doubts, the influence of Mendes, who has a strong relationship with club president Joan Laporta, could be decisive. The agent is said to be actively working to persuade the Barcelona hierarchy that Silva's experience, versatility, and technical quality would be a major asset as the club seeks to return to the summit of European football. The final decision will rest with coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco.
