Chelsea have identified Fulham manager Marco Silva as a serious candidate for their vacant managerial position, according to reports. The Blues are intensifying their search for a permanent successor to the sacked Liam Rosenior and are set to explore Silva's availability. The Portuguese coach is out of contract at the end of the season and has yet to sign an extension with Fulham, despite the club's efforts.
According to The Standard, Chelsea will hold talks with a number of managerial targets and will reach out to Silva's representatives to gauge his interest and situation. The report claims Silva features on a list of several candidates, with checks being made on the circumstances of each. The club's hierarchy is understood to be seeking a manager with Premier League experience to take charge next season, a profile Silva fits after spells with Fulham, Everton, Watford, and Hull City.
Silva is not the only name under consideration. TEAMtalk reports that Chelsea's shortlist includes several other figures. Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola, who is also set to leave his club this summer, is a target, as is former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso. Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is another being considered for his top-flight experience. Sources also indicate former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, currently impressing with Serie A's Como, is a top target, while Al-Ahli's Matthias Jaissle is under active consideration.
Julian Nagelsmann remains a highly admired figure at Stamford Bridge, seen as an ideal long-term fit by the club's hierarchy. However, his commitment to the German national team until after the 2026 World Cup is a significant drawback for Chelsea's immediate plans. The breadth of the search suggests the process of appointing a permanent manager is still in its early stages, with no clear frontrunner yet established.
For Silva, the interest from a club of Chelsea's stature represents a significant opportunity. His work at Fulham has been widely praised, with the team currently sitting tenth in the Premier League and still in contention for European qualification. His tactical flexibility and previous experience in the division are seen as assets. The situation is complicated by his contractual status, which means Chelsea would not need to pay a compensation fee to Fulham if they were to appoint him after his deal expires.
The immediate focus for Silva remains on finishing the season strongly with Fulham. For Chelsea, interim manager Calum McFarlane, who oversaw an FA Cup semi-final victory over Leeds United, will remain in charge for the remainder of the campaign. The club's decision-makers are now tasked with whittling down their extensive list of candidates to find the right individual to lead a squad that has underperformed this season, leaving them eighth in the table and with Champions League qualification unlikely.
