Chelsea have shifted their goalkeeping strategy following the agreement with Xabi Alonso to become their new head coach, with plans for Mike Penders to become the first-choice goalkeeper next season now uncertain. The 20-year-old Belgian, currently with Strasbourg, had been widely tipped to step into the role, particularly under the previous leadership structure led by Liam Rosenior, who had strongly advocated for Penders’ immediate inclusion in the senior setup due to concerns surrounding Robert Sanchez’s consistency.
However, Alonso’s impending arrival has triggered a broader reassessment of key positions within the squad, with a more experienced goalkeeper now emerging as a priority. Sources indicate Alonso’s thinking is influenced by his successful time at Bayer Leverkusen, where experienced captain Lukas Hradecky provided crucial leadership both on and off the pitch. While a new striker was already a priority, a senior goalkeeper has become an increasingly important objective for the Blues.
Chelsea previously attempted to sign AC Milan’s Mike Maignan last summer but were unsuccessful, and despite the opportunity to revisit the deal earlier this year, Maignan signed a contract extension with the Italian club in February. Nevertheless, sources confirm Maignan remains a serious internal option. The club’s recruitment staff have also explored alternatives, including Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen and Sunderland’s Robin Roefs, but concerns exist over whether either possesses the elite-level experience Alonso desires.
Everton’s Jordan Pickford, the England number one, is also a long-standing target for Chelsea, admired for his Premier League pedigree, leadership qualities, and international experience. However, prising Pickford away from Everton is expected to be difficult, as the Toffees are determined to retain one of their key players and Pickford himself is reportedly content at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi and Porto’s Diogo Costa have also been considered, but Maignan is currently viewed as the standout option due to his experience and proven ability. Despite the shift in focus, Chelsea still hold a high regard for Penders, viewing him as a promising young talent with a long-term future at the club, drawing comparisons to Thibaut Courtois’ development path. Even former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech believes Penders is ready for the role, stating he could deputize Robert Sanchez this season and then take over.
