Giorgio Chiellini’s role at Juventus is evolving, with the former defender set to focus on strategic, marketing, and commercial aspects of the club rather than direct involvement in player recruitment. This shift comes as the club welcomes Fredric Ricky Massara, who is poised to take on the role of technical director.
Chiellini’s move away from day-to-day sporting decisions follows a period of six months where he managed transfer matters, a task described as challenging. He will now concentrate on his position as Director of Football Strategy, encompassing institutional relations at both a national and international level. His recent re-election as a federal councilor within the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and his involvement in UEFA and European Club Association (EFC) matters underscore this broadened remit.
The change in responsibilities coincides with the arrival of Giovanni Carnevali as the new club CEO and the beginning of the summer transfer window. Reports suggest that Chiellini’s decision is also driven by a desire to further develop his expertise beyond the pitch, building on his extensive playing career.
This restructuring has led to speculation linking Chiellini with a potential role within the Italian national team setup, as a possible alternative to Paolo Maldini for the position of technical director. Malagò is reportedly considering Chiellini as a ‘plan B’ due to his strong relationships with both Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini. However, as of now, no formal proposals have been made by the FIGC. Chiellini is currently on vacation in California with his family before rejoining Juventus for their pre-season tour in Asia, where he will be present in his new strategic capacity.
