Real Madrid's Éder Militão suffers hamstring injury, set to miss Copa América
Real Madrid defender Éder Militão is facing another extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a significant hamstring injury, according to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope. The Brazilian centre-back sustained the injury to his left hamstring during Real Madrid's midweek match against Alavés and is now expected to undergo surgery. The same source reports the injury will rule him out of this summer's Copa América in the United States.
This setback represents a cruel recurrence for Militão, who missed approximately four months of competition earlier this season after injuring the same hamstring in December. His return to the squad had been a boost for manager Carlo Ancelotti, who is already contending with absences including Thibaut Courtois, Rodrygo, and Arda Güler during a challenging end to the season for the La Liga leaders.
The timing is particularly damaging for the Brazilian national team. With Marquinhos expected to be available, the defensive options for manager Dorival Júnior are now severely tested. The likely candidates to fill the void in the squad include Juventus's Bremer, Atlético Paranaense's Léo Pereira, and Al-Ahli's Roger Ibañez, a group with comparatively limited international tournament experience.
For Real Madrid, the injury depletes defensive depth ahead of the final stages of the Champions League, where they are scheduled to face Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. Militão had re-established himself as a first-choice partner for Antonio Rüdiger following his recovery from an ACL tear suffered on the opening day of the season. His absence now places greater responsibility on the likes of Nacho Fernández and the recently returned David Alaba, who is himself working back to full fitness.
The long-term implications for the 26-year-old's career will also be a concern, given the repetitive nature of the injuries. Since his €50 million move from Porto in 2019, Militão has developed into a mainstay at the heart of Real Madrid's defence, but his progress has been repeatedly halted by serious physical setbacks. The club has not yet issued an official medical update or timeline for his recovery, but reports suggest a period of several months on the sidelines is anticipated.
