Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba’s remarkable journey from his hometown of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, to the pinnacle of German football is the subject of a new documentary released by Bayer 04 Media House. Titled ‘Fierté Burkinabè’ (Pride of Burkina Faso), the film chronicles the 27-year-old’s rise, coinciding with his recent long-term contract extension with Leverkusen.
The documentary begins with Tapsoba’s return to Ouagadougou, a city he describes as “maybe the best city in the world,” and explores the foundations of his character through interviews with family, friends, and mentors. His agent, Filipe Macedo Alves, highlights the humility and welcoming nature instilled in him by his parents, values he believes are central to Tapsoba’s success.
Tapsoba’s early life wasn’t solely focused on football; his parents initially prioritized his education. However, his mother, Tiemtore Zoenabo, encouraged his passion for the game, while his father, Tapsoba Mouni, was initially hesitant. Salitas FC president Yacouba Ouedraogo recalls having to persuade the parents to allow their son to pursue his dream, recognizing his potential from a young age. Despite his father’s initial reservations, the family ultimately rallied behind him as his talent became undeniable.
Tapsoba’s first coach, Drissa, played a crucial role in nurturing his talent, convincing his parents to allow him to focus on football and eventually transitioning him from an attacker to a centre-back. His dedication and work ethic were consistently praised, with Drissa noting his willingness to stay after training to hone his skills. Former Burkina Faso international Boureima Maïga also served as a key mentor, providing guidance and support throughout his early career.
His move to Europe began with a stint at Vitória Guimarães in Portugal, facilitated by Deco, now Barcelona’s sporting director. The transition wasn’t easy, with Tapsoba facing initial difficulties adjusting to a new environment and limited communication with his family. However, his talent quickly shone through, attracting the attention of several European clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen managing director of sport Simon Rolfes recalls the club’s pursuit of Tapsoba in January 2020, ultimately securing his signature for a reported €20 million. Initially hesitant and nervous during training, Tapsoba quickly integrated into the team, making his Bundesliga debut against Borussia Dortmund. He has since become a mainstay in the Leverkusen defense, culminating in a historic 2023/24 season where the club won the Bundesliga title – a first for Tapsoba and a landmark achievement for a player from Burkina Faso.
The documentary highlights the profound impact of Tapsoba’s success on his family and community, with his father expressing immense pride in his son’s achievements and the support he provides. Tapsoba’s commitment extends beyond the pitch, as evidenced by the “Foundation Edmond Tapsoba,” which aims to provide sustainable support to vulnerable people in Burkina Faso.
