Ignazio Abate is now the frontrunner to become the new head coach of Torino, following a meeting between club president Urbano Cairo, sporting director Gianluca Petrachi, and Abate himself on Wednesday, according to reports from La Presse.
This development marks a significant shift in Torino’s managerial search, though some uncertainty remains linked to potential moves from Sassuolo and Abate’s own willingness to accept the position. The club are seeking a replacement for their recently departed manager, with the search having involved several candidates.
Abate, originally from Sant’Agata de’ Goti, has been building his managerial reputation in recent seasons. He previously managed Serie C side Pescara, where he oversaw a period of development and tactical refinement. His focus on a proactive, possession-based style of play has drawn attention from several Serie A clubs.
Torino finished tenth in Serie A last season, a result considered underwhelming given the club’s ambitions. Cairo and Petrachi are seeking a manager capable of implementing a more consistent and attacking philosophy, believing Abate could be the man to deliver that. The club’s ownership has expressed a desire to see Torino regularly challenging for European qualification.
Sassuolo’s potential interest adds a layer of complexity to the situation, as they are also in the market for a new manager. However, La Presse reports that Torino are currently in a stronger position to secure Abate’s services. The coming days are expected to be crucial in determining the final outcome, with further discussions anticipated between all parties.
Should Abate be appointed, he will inherit a Torino squad with established Serie A players, including Nikola Vlasic and Ivan Ilic. His arrival could signal a shift towards a more dynamic and youthful approach, potentially revitalizing the team's attacking output and challenging for a higher league position.
