Junior Adamu has joined FC Schalke 04 on a permanent transfer from SC Freiburg, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Tuesday evening. The Austrian international has signed a contract with the Royal Blues that will keep him at the Veltins-Arena until June 30, 2029.
Adamu arrives at Schalke following a season-long loan spell with Celtic FC, where he enjoyed success, contributing to their Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double. The 25-year-old forward made a total of 67 appearances for Freiburg after joining from RB Salzburg in 2023, registering seven goals and four assists across all competitions for the Breisgauers.
Schalke, recently promoted back to the Bundesliga, are bolstering their attacking options with the versatile Adamu. The move represents an opportunity for the player to establish himself as a key figure in a top-flight league, having previously experienced European football with Salzburg and Freiburg, as well as a successful loan period in Scotland.
Director of Professional Football at Schalke, Youri Mulder, highlighted Adamu’s attributes, stating the player “meets the requirements of our playing style.” Mulder emphasized Adamu’s work rate, his ability to create passing lanes with incisive runs, and his team-oriented approach. He also noted Adamu’s adaptability, pointing out his capacity to play in multiple attacking positions and systems.
Adamu’s arrival provides Schalke manager Karel Geraerts with increased tactical flexibility ahead of the new season. The transfer signifies Schalke’s ambition to solidify their position in the Bundesliga following their promotion, and Adamu will be expected to contribute goals and assists as they aim to establish themselves as a competitive force.
