Karim Adeyemi has completed a permanent transfer from Borussia Dortmund to FC Barcelona, the clubs confirmed on Thursday. The move comes as the German international entered the final year of his contract with Dortmund, prompting the Bundesliga side to seek a transfer fee.
Barcelona will pay a fixed fee of €22 million for Adeyemi, with the potential for the deal to reach €30 million through performance-based bonuses, according to multiple reports. The player has signed a contract with the Catalan club that will run until 2031.
Borussia Dortmund’s managing director of sports, Lars Ricken, stated that despite Adeyemi’s importance to the team – including their run to the 2024 Champions League final – both parties agreed to pursue separate paths. Ricken wished Adeyemi and his family well for the future. Adeyemi himself expressed gratitude to Dortmund for four years with the club, thanking the staff, teammates, and fans for their support.
During his time at Dortmund, Adeyemi made 146 appearances across all competitions, including 98 Bundesliga matches. He scored a total of 36 goals for the club, with 23 of those coming in the German top flight. The transfer reunites Adeyemi with Hansi Flick, who previously managed the forward during his international debut with Germany in 2021, when Adeyemi was 19 years old.
Barcelona will be hoping Adeyemi can add pace and directness to their attack under Flick. The move provides Dortmund with a significant fee for a player who was approaching the end of his contract, while Barcelona secure a promising young talent for their long-term plans.
