Manchester United’s pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson is not yet a done deal, despite the player agreeing personal terms on a three-year contract, according to Fabrizio Romano. The club are internally debating whether to proceed with a move for the Brazilian, as they consider other midfield options ahead of a busy summer window.
United have identified midfield reinforcement as a priority, with Casemiro’s departure and the potential exit of Manuel Ugarte creating a need for depth, particularly with the added demands of Champions League football. While Ederson has emerged as a leading target, the club’s hierarchy are still evaluating other candidates before committing to a final decision.
Romano reports that a United delegation recently travelled to Italy to discuss Ederson and other potential transfer dealings, both incomings and outgoings. However, the final green light for the Ederson transfer has not been given, leaving the player in a state of waiting. The club’s internal discussions are ongoing, and a decision is expected imminently.
Adding to United’s midfield concerns, Arsenal have reportedly entered the race to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United. Recent reports suggested United were nearing a deal for Tonali, but only if his price was reduced. Now, according to a report in Italy, Arsenal have initiated talks with Newcastle to determine the feasibility of a potential transfer.
The Gunners are currently assessing the financial implications of a move for Tonali, potentially challenging United’s position in the negotiation. This development could force United to accelerate their pursuit of Ederson or explore alternative midfield targets.
Further afield, Manchester United are also monitoring Sporting CP full-back Maxi Araujo, according to Caught Offside. However, his £70 million release clause may prove prohibitive, especially with the club prioritizing midfield reinforcements. Cheaper alternatives, such as Neco Williams and Lewis Hall, are also under consideration as potential additions to the squad. The pursuit of Araujo highlights United's continued interest in players from Sporting CP, despite the departure of former manager Ruben Amorim. A move for Araujo would add competition to the left-back position, but the high release clause presents a significant obstacle.
These developments indicate a fluid transfer window for Manchester United, with multiple targets being considered and competition from rival clubs intensifying the challenge of securing key signings.
