A 20-year-old university student was assaulted by a group of four individuals in Ancona on Sunday night, with the attack reportedly motivated by the victim wearing a Juventus sweatshirt. The incident occurred in Piazza Martelli, near the Cardeto park and close to the Faculty of Economics. According to initial reconstructions reported by Cronache Maceratesi, a verbal altercation escalated quickly into a physical assault, with the victim being struck multiple times before the assailants fled the scene.
The young man, a student from Recanati, sustained a facial trauma involving the orbital area and was transported under a yellow code, indicating intermediate urgency, to the Torrette hospital. Police patrols and the Croce Gialla ambulance service responded to the incident. The investigation has been taken up by the police, with support from the Digos anti-terrorism and organized crime unit, and is currently ongoing.
Investigators are reviewing footage from surveillance cameras in the area and are relying on cooperation from the victim, who is reported to have recognised at least one of the attackers. Authorities have stated that, for now, they are not linking this assault to other recent episodes of urban violence, describing it as an isolated incident. However, the event raises questions about the dangerous spillover of sporting rivalries beyond the confines of stadiums.
The attack underscores a concerning trend where club allegiance, displayed through simple items of clothing, can provoke extreme and unprovoked violence in everyday settings. Such incidents, while often treated as isolated by law enforcement, contribute to a broader dialogue about safety and the culture of football fandom in Italy. The police investigation aims to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the assault.
