Ajax Amsterdam have announced the appointment of Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz, known as Míchel, as their new head coach. The Spanish manager has signed a two-year contract with the Dutch giants, extending until June 30, 2028, the club confirmed on Sunday.
Míchel joins Ajax after a recent spell with Girona, where he was recently in charge until the club’s relegation to the Spanish second division. Despite the disappointing end to the season, Míchel had previously guided Girona to a remarkable third-place finish in La Liga during the 2023-2024 campaign, securing Champions League qualification. His attractive style of play and tactical acumen were key to that success.
The appointment comes as Ajax seek to revitalize their fortunes after a period of underperformance. The Amsterdam club finished fifth in the Eredivisie last season and were eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League, failing to win a trophy for the past four years. Jordi Cruyff, Ajax’s sporting director, expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment, stating that Míchel is an “ambitious and demanding coach” whose approach is well-suited to the club. Cruyff added he has followed Míchel’s career for many years.
Míchel himself expressed his pride at joining such a historic club, stating his goal is to “return Ajax to where it should be.” He believes he and the team can achieve this objective. The 50-year-old has previous managerial experience with Rayo Vallecano and Huesca, demonstrating a consistent ability to build competitive teams. This move represents a significant step in his managerial career, taking him to one of Europe’s most storied clubs.
The arrival of Míchel is expected to usher in a new era at Ajax, focused on a more proactive and attacking style of football. His track record suggests he is capable of instilling a clear tactical identity and motivating players to perform at their best, potentially restoring Ajax to its former glory.
