Nathan Aké has joined Turkish Süper Lig side Fenerbahçe on a permanent transfer following his time at Manchester City, the club confirmed. The Netherlands international will link up with the squad in Austria after a break following his participation in the World Cup with the Dutch national team.
Aké, 31, will experience a new league for the first time in his professional career, having spent his entire playing career in England. He previously featured for Chelsea, Reading, Watford, and Bournemouth before joining Manchester City in the summer of 2020. His time at the Etihad Stadium proved successful, yielding a Premier League title, an FA Cup, and a Champions League trophy – the latter of which was secured in Istanbul.
The defender recently featured for the Netherlands at the World Cup in Qatar, where they were eliminated by Morocco in the round of 16 following a penalty shootout. Aké’s move to Fenerbahçe represents a fresh start for the player, offering him regular first-team football and a new challenge in a different footballing environment.
Fenerbahçe have been active in the transfer market, seeking to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season. The club recently saw their manager dismissed following a defeat in the derby. Aké’s arrival adds much-needed experience and quality to their defensive options. The move could prove beneficial for both parties, with Aké gaining a new platform and Fenerbahçe acquiring a proven winner.
