Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro has indicated he will discuss his future with Hellas Verona officials during the off-season, following a frustrating campaign for the club. The midfielder spoke after Verona’s match against Roma, expressing his disappointment with the team’s overall performance despite acknowledging the individual quality within the squad.
Akpa Akpro suggested a lack of collective cohesion hampered Verona’s progress throughout the season. He stated, according to Redazione Hellas1903, that the team possessed quality players but “didn’t find the solution together,” and that something was missing at a group level. He noted inconsistencies in team unity, observing that some matches were played with a strong collective spirit while others were not.
The 31-year-old joined Verona in January 2022 from Lazio, initially on loan before making the move permanent. He has become a regular fixture in the Verona midfield, contributing with his energy and versatility. Last season, Akpa Akpro made 28 appearances in Serie A, starting 19 of those matches. He has previously played for Empoli, Benevento, and Salernitana in Italy’s top flight.
Verona finished 19th in Serie A this past season, resulting in relegation to Serie B. The club’s struggles stemmed from an inability to consistently pick up points, managing only eight wins and 11 draws throughout the campaign. A significant overhaul of the squad is anticipated as Verona prepares for life in the second tier.
Akpa Akpro’s comments suggest he is open to remaining with Verona, but his future will depend on discussions with the club regarding their plans for the upcoming season. His experience in Serie A could be valuable as Verona aims for a swift return to the top flight, but he may also attract interest from other clubs. The player’s next steps will likely become clearer after his talks with Verona management during the break.
