Chelsea have been urged to make a move for Manchester City defender John Stones when his contract expires this summer, according to former England midfielder Glenn Hoddle. Stones, along with teammate Bernardo Silva, has announced his intention to leave the Etihad at the end of the current season.
Hoddle, speaking on TNT Sports’ The Breakdown, believes Stones would bring much-needed experience and a positive attitude to the Chelsea squad. He emphasized the need for “good apples” within the dressing room and highlighted Stones’ character and continued quality as a player. Joleon Lescott echoed this sentiment, suggesting Stones’ winning mentality and track record of success would be easily respected by the current Chelsea group.
Stones has been a key figure for Manchester City since joining from Everton in 2016, winning multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and the Champions League. However, his playing time has fluctuated in recent seasons, and with his contract nearing its end, a departure appears increasingly likely. Reports in March indicated Stones was already considering a return to Everton.
Hoddle also used the opportunity to criticize the ownership group, BlueCo, for their handling of Thomas Tuchel’s departure in September 2022. He argued that Tuchel, who led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021, should not have been forced out due to interference in team matters. Hoddle expressed concern about a growing “disillusionment” among Chelsea players regarding the club’s leadership.
Chelsea are currently preparing for the FA Cup final against Manchester City, where they will be considered underdogs. Hoddle believes a significant performance will be required for Chelsea to have any chance of victory, citing a growing gap in quality between the two sides. The club is also actively searching for a new head coach, with Xabi Alonso among a list of seven candidates being considered, alongside Andoni Iraola.
