David Alaba will leave Real Madrid following the conclusion of the current season, the club announced on Friday. The departure brings an end to a five-year association between the defender and the Spanish giants.
The Austrian international joined Real Madrid from Bayern Munich in 2021 and has made 131 appearances for the club, winning eleven titles including two Champions League trophies and two La Liga titles. Despite his success, Alaba’s time in Madrid has been hampered by injuries.
Alaba’s versatility has been a key asset for both club and country, being deployed as a centre-back, left-back, and even in midfield. He was a crucial part of Bayern Munich’s dominant period under Hansi Flick, winning multiple Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2020 before his move to Spain.
Real Madrid will hold a farewell ceremony for Alaba during their final match of the season against Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday evening. The club did not specify Alaba’s next destination, leaving his future plans uncertain. Reports suggest he may be seeking a new challenge elsewhere in Europe, though no concrete links have emerged at this time.
The departure of Alaba leaves a void in Real Madrid’s squad, particularly given his ability to play multiple positions. The club is currently assessing their options for strengthening their defense ahead of next season, with several players already linked with a move to the Bernabéu.
