Albert Riera addresses Eintracht Frankfurt's form after Augsburg draw
Eintracht Frankfurt manager Albert Riera has called for improved consistency from his side after a 1-1 draw away at Augsburg on Saturday. The result leaves Frankfurt seventh in the Bundesliga, narrowly ahead of Freiburg on goal difference but having missed an opportunity to solidify their position in the European qualification race. Ritsu Doan's second-half equalizer salvaged a point after a subdued first-half performance from the visitors.
Speaking after the match, Riera expressed his dissatisfaction with the team's start. "We came here to win and get closer to our goal," Riera said. "It wasn't our best first half, but we did better in the second. Compared to previous matches, it was the opposite. This time, we didn't start well and were significantly stronger after the break." The manager highlighted the difficulty in containing Augsburg's counter-attacks, a known strength of the home side, while acknowledging his team's improved transitional play later in the game.
The draw marks a second consecutive week without a win for Frankfurt, following a defeat to Bayern Munich, as they enter the final stretch of the season. Riera emphasized the need for continued high-intensity work on the training ground to address these inconsistencies. "We've had a strong week of training and need another week like that with this attitude, atmosphere, and intensity," he stated. "Everyone will be important in the last three games. We need the character that the team showed in the second half today."
Frankfurt's pursuit of a top-six finish, which would secure a Europa League spot, now faces a significant challenge. They will be without goalscorer Ritsu Doan for next weekend's crucial home fixture against struggling Hamburger SV due to suspension for accumulated yellow cards. Their season concludes with daunting fixtures against Champions League-bound Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart, making the match against HSV increasingly pivotal.
Riera's focus on finding the "right mix and balance" between defensive solidity and attacking transition will be tested in these final weeks. The team's form has been inconsistent since the international break, and securing European football for next season now hinges on navigating a difficult run-in while missing a key offensive contributor at a critical moment.
