Eintracht Frankfurt manager Albert Riera has called for continued intensity from his squad after a 1-1 draw away at Augsburg left their European qualification hopes in a delicate balance. The result, secured by a Ritsu Doan equalizer, moved Frankfurt into seventh place on goal difference but represented a missed opportunity to apply pressure on rivals Freiburg ahead of the final three matchdays of the Bundesliga season.
Speaking after the match, Riera expressed his dissatisfaction with dropping points for a second consecutive week, stating the team's clear objective was victory. He provided a frank assessment of the performance, noting a sluggish first half followed by a stronger second. "Compared to previous matches, it was the opposite," Riera said, according to post-match reports. "This time, we didn't start well and were significantly stronger after the break."
The manager highlighted the tactical challenge posed by Augsburg's counter-attacking style, an area where he felt his team was not always successful. He did, however, point to positive moments in transition during the second period as a sign of the squad's latent capabilities. "We need to find the right mix and balance," Riera added, emphasizing the ongoing search for consistency.
As is often the case in his public comments, Riera turned his focus to the training pitch as the foundation for improvement. He stated that the team had experienced a strong week of preparation leading into the Augsburg fixture and stressed the necessity of replicating that effort. "We need another week like that with this attitude, atmosphere, and intensity," Riera said. "Everyone will be important in the last three games. We need the character that the team showed in the second half today."
The final stretch of Frankfurt's season presents a significant challenge, complicating their push for a European berth. After hosting a struggling Hamburger SV side next weekend, they conclude the campaign with daunting fixtures against Champions League-bound Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart. Their task against HSV will be made more difficult by the absence of goalscorer Ritsu Doan, who is suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
Currently, seventh place may be enough for a Europa Conference League qualifying spot, depending on the outcome of the DFB-Pokal final. The draw in Augsburg keeps Frankfurt in the hunt but leaves little margin for error in their decisive final trio of matches, placing a premium on the intensity and character demanded by their manager.
