Albert Riera remains focused on Frankfurt's final push after Augsburg draw
Eintracht Frankfurt head coach Albert Riera has stressed the need for continued intensity as his team's European qualification hopes were dented by a 1-1 draw away at Augsburg. The result leaves Frankfurt seventh in the Bundesliga, ahead of Freiburg only on goal difference, after failing to capitalise on their rivals' postponed fixture against Borussia Dortmund.
Speaking after the match, Riera expressed his disappointment at dropping points in successive weeks. "We came here to win and get closer to our goal," he said. The coach analysed a performance where his team improved after the interval, noting, "It wasn't our best first half, but we did better in the second. Compared to previous matches, it was the opposite. This time, we didn't start well and were significantly stronger after the break."
Riera highlighted the tactical challenge posed by Augsburg's counter-attacking style, an area where Frankfurt struggled at times. He pointed to positive signs, however, stating, "In the second half, we also showed that we can transition well and have players for those moments. We need to find the right mix and balance." The equalising goal came from Japanese international Ritsu Doan, who will now miss the next crucial fixture due to suspension for accumulated yellow cards.
With just three matches remaining in the Bundesliga season, Riera emphasised the importance of the upcoming training period. "We've had a strong week of training and need another week like that with this attitude, atmosphere, and intensity," he said. "Everyone will be important in the last three games. We need the character that the team showed in the second half today." This focus on preparation is a recurring theme in Riera's press conferences.
The final stretch presents a significant challenge for Frankfurt. They host a struggling Hamburger SV next weekend before concluding the campaign with daunting away trips to both Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart, two sides firmly in the Champions League places. Securing a top-six finish, which would guarantee European football next season, will require navigating this difficult schedule without key attacker Doan for the pivotal HSV clash. The draw in Augsburg means the margin for error in these final games has now virtually disappeared.
