The German Football Association (DFB) has held discussions with national team manager Julian Nagelsmann following their disappointing round of sixteen exit at the World Cup against Paraguay, the organization confirmed. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf stated that a lengthy meeting took place with Nagelsmann, as well as sporting director Andreas Rettig and Rudi Völler, with all parties expressing significant disappointment at the result.
According to reports, the outcome fell short of expectations and pre-tournament objectives. Nagelsmann himself acknowledged his dismay, indicating that further meetings are planned to thoroughly analyze the team’s performance and identify the reasons why their potential was not fully realized. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive review following such an early elimination, stating that simply moving forward without addressing the issues would be unacceptable.
While no immediate decisions have been made regarding Nagelsmann’s future, speculation is already mounting about potential replacements. Jürgen Klopp, recently departed from Liverpool, has been prominently mentioned in connection with the German national team role. Klopp’s availability and proven track record of success make him an attractive candidate for the DFB, though no formal approach has been reported at this time.
Nagelsmann was appointed as Germany manager in September 2023, succeeding Hansi Flick after a period of poor form. Prior to taking the national team job, the 36-year-old had established himself as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches, having previously managed Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, and Bayern Munich. His tenure with Bayern ended in March 2023, despite a Bundesliga title win, due to inconsistent performances and a perceived lack of control within the squad. The DFB will be weighing whether to give Nagelsmann more time to build a cohesive team or pursue a more experienced figure like Klopp to immediately revitalize the program. The early World Cup exit has placed significant pressure on the association to make the right decision for the future of German football.
