Manchester United remain interested in signing Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid this summer, though a deal hinges on the Spanish club changing their stance and the player’s high salary demands, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano and TEAMtalk.
United have been linked with the French midfielder for several weeks, with initial contact made with Tchouameni’s representatives in April. Romano reported on Monday that United “love” the player, but highlighted salary concerns and the fact that Real Madrid are not currently looking to sell. He reiterated this position on Wednesday, stating that neither United nor Tchouameni’s agents have received any indication from Madrid that the player is available.
However, Romano clarified that United “will be ready” to pursue a deal should Madrid alter their position. The primary obstacle remains Tchouameni’s salary, which is deemed too high for United’s current financial parameters. This comes as Real Madrid, under newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho, are undertaking a significant squad overhaul.
TEAMtalk understands that Madrid have informed Tchouameni that his long-term future at the Bernabeu is not guaranteed. This development stems from Mourinho’s plans for a squad revolution, having already secured deals for Ibrahima Konate, Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva and Denzel Dumfries. Mourinho is also targeting Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez as a further midfield reinforcement, potentially impacting Tchouameni’s role.
Tchouameni has been a regular for France at the ongoing World Cup, demonstrating his quality on the international stage. He joined Real Madrid from Monaco in 2022 and has established himself as a key player in midfield, though his position is now under scrutiny with Mourinho’s arrival. Should Madrid decide to facilitate his departure, United are prepared to make a move, but the financial hurdles remain significant. A potential move could reshape United’s midfield options, while Madrid would free up funds and space for Mourinho’s desired reinforcements.
