Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri has indicated the club is assessing potential defensive reinforcements following an injury to Alessandro Buongiorno, though he stressed transfer decisions rest with the club’s ownership. Speaking to Sky Sports after a 2-0 friendly win over Carrarese in Dimaro, Allegri highlighted the positive aspects of the match while acknowledging areas for improvement.
The Italian coach praised his team’s performance, noting they were “better on the pitch” than in previous outings and importantly, kept a clean sheet. He also acknowledged the numerous absences within the squad but emphasized the existing quality within the group. Buongiorno’s injury, however, has created a specific need in central defense, a position Allegri believes requires evaluation by the club’s transfer team.
Allegri stated there are still 35 days remaining in the transfer window, but activity across Serie A is currently slow. He intends to focus on training the players at his disposal and will collaborate with the club to determine any necessary additions. The manager’s comments suggest a measured approach to the market, prioritizing calm and clear assessment over hasty decisions.
Turning to individual players, Allegri offered brief updates on several members of the Napoli squad. He admitted he has not had sufficient opportunity to evaluate Giovanni Simeone Lucca due to a recent injury. Regarding Rasmus Hojlund and Amir Rrahmani, Allegri stated both players are talented but require further development and work, noting they are still early in pre-season training.
Allegri also commented on the anticipated arrival of Kevin De Bruyne, expressing confidence the Belgian midfielder will be motivated and contribute to the team. He anticipates a demanding season with Napoli competing on three fronts and believes a strong, deep squad will be essential for success. This suggests the club is aiming to build a team capable of challenging for multiple trophies.
