Massimiliano Allegri is set to formally end his contract with AC Milan today, paving the way for his anticipated appointment as Napoli’s new manager. The move follows a deteriorating relationship with the Milan hierarchy, stemming from disagreements over transfer strategy and the club’s disappointing end to the season, which saw them miss out on Champions League qualification. Reports indicate tensions escalated following a clash with Zlatan Ibrahimovic during a strategic meeting, diffused only by the intervention of Igli Tare.
Negotiations regarding Allegri’s severance package were difficult, with the manager initially seeking €5 million (gross) – €2 million for himself and the remainder for his staff – despite Milan saving €13.6 million (gross) through his dismissal. An agreement was eventually reached. Following the resolution, Allegri will meet with Napoli’s sporting director, Mauro Manna, to begin planning the upcoming transfer window.
Behind the scenes, Milan owner Gerry Cardinale reportedly expected resignations from Allegri, CEO Furlani, and Tare after the defeat to Cagliari, and had halted contract renewal talks with scout Moncada. Moncada is now free to seek opportunities elsewhere, with a move to Nice reportedly close.
Allegri is keen to bring Adrien Rabiot with him to Napoli, having previously worked with the midfielder. He has reportedly identified Rabiot as a key target for De Laurentiis and Manna, believing the player could thrive in a Champions League environment, something Milan can’t offer next season. However, Milan are resisting the move, stating they will not be pressured into selling and will demand a significant fee for the player, who is contracted until 2028.
Cardinale is reportedly unhappy with the role players played in Milan’s recent failures, and the club is preparing for a significant overhaul. Potential departures include Yunus Musah, Warren Bondo, and Ismael Bennacer, with the latter potentially offered a contract termination. Samuel Chukwueze’s situation is also uncertain, with Fulham’s previously expressed interest falling short of Milan’s valuation. The club is also looking to integrate young Italian players such as Christian Comotto, Kevin Zeroli, and Francesco Camarda into the first-team squad. Rafael Leao’s desire to move to a top-five league is also being monitored, though a transfer will depend on suitable offers.
