Massimiliano Allegri is set to become the new manager of Napoli, despite Vincenzo Italiano initially being the frontrunner for the position. The move comes after Bologna and Italiano mutually agreed to terminate their partnership a year ahead of his contract’s expiration, following two seasons that included a Coppa Italia victory in 2025 against Milan. Napoli had initially pursued Italiano, with a draft agreement for a two-year contract at €3 million per year, but ultimately shifted focus to Allegri.
According to reports, decisive talks between Allegri and Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis and sporting director Giovanni Manna sealed the deal. Allegri reportedly expressed his willingness to take over from Antonio Conte, similar to his appointment at Juventus years prior. He will sign a two-year contract with an option for a third season, earning an annual salary of €5 million. This marks a return to management for Allegri after his departure from Juventus in 2021.
Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino, currently managing the United States national team, has acknowledged contact with Milan, who are searching for a replacement for Allegri. Pochettino stated his agents are exploring opportunities, but he remains committed to his current role. He is considered a potential candidate for the Milan job, alongside others.
Allegri was recently honored with the ‘Giovanni Galeone’ award in Pescara, where he fondly remembered his former mentor. He spoke of Galeone’s innovative approach to the game and the importance of maintaining a lighthearted attitude while remaining serious about the profession. He also briefly addressed the Napoli move, stating it was not the appropriate time for discussion.
Interestingly, Allegri previously played for Napoli during the 1997/98 season, though the team was relegated to Serie B that year. His appointment will make him the first former Napoli player to manage the club under Aurelio De Laurentiis’ ownership. Vincenzo Italiano, after reaching a mutual agreement with Bologna, expressed his gratitude to the club and its supporters, stating a strong relationship remains despite his departure. Bologna are now considering Eusebio Di Francesco, Daniele De Rossi, and Raffaele Palladino as potential replacements.
