Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has identified Brentford striker Igor Thiago as a priority target in his first transfer window at Stamford Bridge, according to a report from Fussball Daten. The potential arrival of the Brazilian international could trigger a significant reshuffle of Chelsea’s attacking options, with as many as four players potentially leaving the club this summer.
Alonso was officially appointed as Chelsea’s manager on a four-year contract, granting him greater control over player recruitment than previous head coaches. Despite substantial spending exceeding £1.5 billion under the BlueCo ownership, Alonso recognises the need for further squad improvements, potentially targeting a new striker, left winger, left-back, centre-half and goalkeeper.
Thiago has emerged as a ‘breakout star’ in the Premier League this season, scoring 25 goals in 39 appearances, with 22 coming in the league. While eight of those goals were penalties, the 24-year-old has demonstrated a consistent ability to find the net against challenging opposition. Brentford initially signed Thiago for a club-record £30 million, and are now reportedly seeking a fee of €80 million (£69 million) for the forward.
Sources indicate that Chelsea officials believe acquiring a proven Premier League goalscorer like Thiago could be a catalyst for a potential title challenge. However, his price tag could reach around £90 million, three times Brentford’s original investment.
Alongside a potential move for Thiago, Fussball Daten reports that Liam Delap, Alejandro Garnacho, Marc Guiu, and Jamie Gittens are all considered ‘potential departures’ from Chelsea. Delap’s position is particularly vulnerable, having been superseded by Joao Pedro, and Thiago’s arrival would further diminish his opportunities. Should Alonso sell both Garnacho and Gittens, he would likely seek a new left winger, with Nico Williams, Anthony Gordon and Morgan Rogers identified as possible options. Thiago previously earned a spot in Brazil’s World Cup squad ahead of Pedro, who has been a standout performer for Chelsea this season.
