Xabi Alonso has agreed to a four-year contract to become the new manager of Chelsea, and the club is reportedly considering a move for Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz, according to Football Insider. Alonso and Wirtz previously worked together at Bayer Leverkusen, where the German attacking midfielder enjoyed a breakout season in 2023-24, scoring 18 goals and providing 20 assists in 49 games, leading Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title.
Wirtz was named Bundesliga Player of the Year following his impressive performances under Alonso, but has struggled to replicate that form since joining Liverpool last June for a reported £116 million. Despite his underwhelming debut season at Anfield, Chelsea, under the direction of their new manager, are said to be ‘keen’ on bringing Wirtz to Stamford Bridge.
Sources indicate that Liverpool ‘would be open to letting Wirtz go’ for the right price, although the club would publicly deny any willingness to sell. Alonso is described as a potential ‘saving grace’ for Wirtz’s Premier League career, offering a familiar environment where the player previously thrived. However, it is suggested that a sale would require a fee in the region of £100-115 million, a significant investment for Chelsea, who may have more pressing needs in other positions such as striker and centre-back.
While the prospect of a reunion is appealing, the likelihood of the transfer is questioned, as Liverpool have given Wirtz time to adapt to the Premier League and anticipate improved performances alongside other key players next season. The financial implications and Chelsea’s other squad requirements also present obstacles to the deal. Recent reports suggest Chelsea are also exploring options for a £69 million striker and have identified other potential targets for Alonso to pursue.
