Incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has been encouraged to move quickly for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton this summer, potentially ahead of interest from Liverpool and Manchester United. Alonso is set to take charge at Stamford Bridge in July, having agreed to a four-year contract following a period where Chelsea finished tenth in the Premier League and failed to qualify for European competition after a disappointing end to the season under previous manager Liam Rosenior.
A significant overhaul of the Chelsea squad is anticipated, with reports suggesting that Enzo Fernandez could be sold to Real Madrid for a fee of around £120 million, with Manchester City also expressing interest in the Argentine. Former Chelsea player Andy Townsend believes Wharton would be an ideal replacement for Fernandez, suggesting he could form a strong midfield partnership with Moises Caicedo.
Townsend highlighted Wharton’s playing style, comparing him to Michael Carrick due to his composure and ability to find passing options quickly. He noted that Wharton’s recent omission from the England World Cup squad could motivate him to seek a move to a club where he can further develop his career. Palace’s recent success may also make a transfer more appealing for the midfielder.
Wharton is currently valued in the region of £80 million, and while Liverpool and Manchester United have also been linked with a move, Townsend believes his left-footed ability alongside Caicedo would be a valuable asset for Chelsea. Alonso is also reportedly looking to strengthen his attacking options, with the club exploring potential signings from Serie A, and is keen to add further depth to the squad with the pursuit of Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi.
