Argentina forward Julián Álvarez has publicly stated his wish to leave Atletico Madrid during the current summer transfer window. The 26-year-old revealed his desire to depart following Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria on Monday, telling ESPN (via Fabrizio Romano) that he believes a departure is “the best for everyone involved” and that he wants to “fulfill my dream.”
Álvarez has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona for several months, and reports suggest he has already agreed personal terms with the Catalan club. Barcelona view him as an ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who left the club earlier this year. Despite interest from Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona remain the clear frontrunners for his signature.
Atletico Madrid recently rejected a substantial €150 million bid from Real Madrid for Álvarez, effectively ending any possibility of a move to the Bernabeu. Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid have since shifted their focus to other targets, including Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez. Barcelona have already had a €100 million offer turned down by Atletico, but are continuing to push for a deal.
Álvarez has been a consistent performer for Atletico Madrid since joining the club, contributing goals and assists in La Liga and the Champions League. He previously played for Manchester City, where he won multiple league titles and the Champions League. His current Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is €113 million, with a range of €101.7 million to €124.3 million.
Barcelona have already invested significantly in their attack this summer, bringing in Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for €80 million. However, Hansi Flick is determined to secure Álvarez as a long-term successor to Lewandowski. With Álvarez’s explicit desire to leave Atletico, a transfer to Barcelona appears increasingly likely before the transfer window closes on September 1st. A successful transfer would bolster Barcelona’s attacking options and provide a focal point for their attack in the upcoming season.
