Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has informed the club of his desire to leave this summer, with Barcelona his preferred destination, according to reports. The 26-year-old has attracted interest from several European giants including Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, but has reportedly prioritized a move to the Catalan side.
Atletico are expected to demand a transfer fee of around €150 million for Alvarez, despite his €500 million release clause. The club’s leaders have been made aware of the player’s wishes, and are prepared to negotiate with interested parties, according to El Chiringuito. Pundit Jose Alvarez stated that Alvarez has specifically communicated his preference for Barcelona, though PSG have also made contact with his representatives.
Barcelona’s ability to finance the deal remains a significant obstacle, with concerns over their financial situation persisting. The club will need to adhere to a 1:1 financial ratio, which will come into effect in July, before being able to engage in more direct negotiations. Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness recently suggested Barcelona lack the financial resources for major signings, referencing their previous struggles with high-profile transfers.
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone was non-committal regarding Alvarez’s future following a 5-1 defeat to Villarreal on the final day of the La Liga season. He stated that the matter was for Alvarez to decide, implying the player had already reached a conclusion. Alvarez has been a key player for Atletico since joining the club, contributing significantly in attack, but appears ready for a new challenge.
Should Barcelona successfully secure Alvarez’s signature, it would be a significant statement of intent, signalling a return to financial stability after a period of economic difficulty. However, Arsenal and PSG possess greater financial firepower and could potentially outbid Barcelona for the World Cup winner. The transfer would represent a substantial investment for any club, with Alvarez’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) exceeding €110 million.
