Everton’s hopes of signing Roma right-back Wesley Franca this summer have been dealt a blow, with Arsenal emerging as strong competition, according to TEAMtalk. The Toffees’ likely failure to qualify for European football is cited as a significant obstacle in attracting the 22-year-old Brazilian.
Everton drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace on Sunday, leaving them 10th in the Premier League and two points shy of a potential Europa Conference League qualification spot. A lack of European competition is expected to limit the calibre of players David Moyes can attract during the transfer window.
Franca has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Roma following his move from Flamengo in 2025, quickly becoming one of Serie A’s most highly-rated young defenders. His athleticism, attacking prowess, and defensive maturity have drawn attention from several Premier League clubs. The Friedkin Group, owners of both Roma and Everton, were initially believed to be open to a move within their multi-club structure, with Everton viewed as a viable destination.
However, sources close to the player suggest that Franca is prioritising clubs offering elite-level competition. He is understood to be seeking continued participation in major European tournaments to further his development. Arsenal have maintained a strong interest in Franca since March, alongside Liverpool and Newcastle United. The Gunners are actively exploring right-back options ahead of the summer window.
Liverpool also appreciate Franca’s profile and versatility, while Newcastle have been tracking him extensively. However, Newcastle may also face difficulties in persuading Franca to join due to their own uncertain European prospects. Roma are relaxed about the situation, acknowledging the player’s increased value but would only consider substantial offers for the Brazilian. The club are aware that Franca’s value has risen sharply due to his performances in Serie A.
