Ruben Amorim has been appointed as the new manager of AC Milan, arriving from Manchester United seeking a career resurgence, while the club has simultaneously completed the signing of striker Gonçalo Ramos for a club-record fee of €70 million. Both Amorim and Milan are aiming to return to prominence after recent disappointments – Amorim following a challenging spell in England and Milan missing out on Champions League qualification for the past two seasons.
Amorim, known for his innovative and winning approach, aims to implement his distinctive style at Milanello. He has a reputation for effective squad management and developing young talent, attributes that resonated with the Milan hierarchy. The Portuguese manager’s career began as a player, progressing through the Benfica and Belenenses academies before a ten-trophy spell with Benfica as a player alongside stars like Ángel Di María and David Luiz. He also earned 28 caps for the Portuguese national team, playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe.
Following a playing career cut short by knee injuries, Amorim quickly transitioned into coaching, beginning with Casa Pia before gaining prominence at Braga, where he led the first team after initially managing the B team. His success at Braga earned him the attention of Sporting CP in 2020, where he enjoyed a highly successful period, winning two Portuguese league titles, two League Cups, and a Super Cup. During his time at Sporting, he oversaw the development and lucrative sales of players like Nuno Mendes, Matheus Nunes, and Manuel Ugarte. His move to Manchester United in November 2024, however, proved less fruitful, resulting in a 15th-place Premier League finish and a loss in the Europa League final, ultimately leading to his dismissal in January 2026.
Amorim’s tactical approach is described as modern and offensive, emphasizing aggression, courage, and intelligent movement off the ball. He favors a 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-3 formation, prioritizing quick transitions and dynamic attacking play. He expects his defenders to be comfortable in possession and his full-backs to contribute significantly to the attack. The signing of Gonçalo Ramos, a Portuguese international, is seen as a key addition to facilitate Amorim’s tactical vision and address a crucial need in the Milan squad. Ramos arrives from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee that could rise to €80 million with add-ons, marking a significant investment in the club’s future. This move signals Milan’s intent to support Amorim with the players he desires as they look to challenge for a return to the Champions League.
