Ruben Amorim has been appointed as the new manager of AC Milan, arriving from Manchester United seeking a career revival, with the club confirming the move on July 4th, 2026. The Italian club, who have missed out on Champions League qualification for the past two seasons, hope Amorim can restore them to European prominence. Accompanying the Portuguese manager is fellow countryman Gonçalo Ramos, who joins from Paris Saint-Germain for a club-record fee of €70 million, potentially rising to €80 million with add-ons.
Both Amorim and Milan are motivated by a desire for redemption. Amorim’s time at Manchester United was considered disappointing following a promising start, while Milan have struggled to return to the Champions League after two seasons of absence. Amorim is known for his innovative and winning approach, coupled with a focus on developing young talent, qualities Milan hope will translate to success in Serie A.
Amorim began his playing career as a midfielder, progressing through the youth systems of Benfica and Belenenses before enjoying a successful spell at Benfica, winning ten trophies alongside players like Ángel Di María and David Luiz. He earned 16 international caps for Portugal, playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe. His playing career was cut short at 32 due to knee injuries, prompting his transition into coaching.
He quickly made a name for himself in management with Braga, initially taking charge of the B team before swiftly being promoted to the first team. He then moved to Sporting CP in 2020, where he enjoyed a highly successful period, winning two Portuguese league titles, two League Cups, and a Super Cup. He was instrumental in developing players like Nuno Mendes and Matheus Nunes, who were later sold for significant fees. His tenure at Sporting ended when Manchester United triggered his €10 million release clause in November 2024.
Amorim’s tactical approach is described as modern and offensive, emphasizing aggression, pressing, and intelligent movement off the ball. He favors a 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-3 formation, prioritizing quick transitions and attacking play. He demands a high level of fitness and tactical discipline from his players, focusing on winning the ball back high up the pitch. His coaching style is characterized by strong personal relationships with players and a focus on team unity.
Prior to accepting the Milan offer, Amorim was also approached by his former club Benfica, but ultimately opted for the challenge in Italy. The arrival of Ramos is the first significant signing under Amorim, addressing a key need in the Milan squad. The club hopes Amorim’s influence will lead to further reinforcements and a return to the Champions League.
