AC Milan, under newly appointed manager Ruben Amorim, are considering a move for Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount this summer. The Italian club are prepared to back Amorim in the transfer window, having already secured a €70 million deal for Paris Saint-Germain striker Goncalo Ramos.
According to a report from MilanPress, Amorim has identified Mount as a key target and has given the ‘green light’ to begin negotiations. This comes as Manchester United are reportedly open to offers for the 27-year-old, with sources indicating a loan deal with an option or obligation to buy is the most likely outcome.
Mount joined Manchester United from Chelsea in a £55 million transfer in 2023, but has struggled to consistently replicate the form he showed at Stamford Bridge. He has faced challenges adapting to Michael Carrick’s system, and is reportedly feeling ‘out of place’ within the current squad. A fee of around €25 million (£21.6m / $28.5m) has been suggested as potentially enough to secure a permanent transfer.
However, Mount’s reported wages of £250,000 per week could prove a significant obstacle for Milan, unless the player is willing to accept a substantial pay cut. A loan move appears more feasible at this stage. Interest also exists from the Premier League, with newly promoted Coventry City, managed by former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, and Hull City both expressing admiration for the midfielder. Lampard, who previously managed Mount at both Chelsea and Derby County, views him as a ‘dream target’.
Amorim previously worked with Mount during his time at Manchester United, and clearly retains faith in his abilities despite inconsistent performances and injury concerns. A reunion in Milan could provide Mount with a fresh start and a prominent role under a manager who believes in him. This move would allow United to free up wages and potentially recoup some of the significant fee they paid for the player last year.
