Ander Herrera has terminated his contract with Boca Juniors, bringing an end to his year-and-a-half spell with the Argentine club. The agreement to release the 36-year-old midfielder was reached mutually, according to reports from Argentine media outlet Olé and confirmed by L'Équipe. Herrera had initially joined Boca in January 2025 and his contract was due to expire in December.
The Spaniard arrived at Boca Juniors following a three-year stint with Paris Saint-Germain, where he played between 2019 and 2022. Prior to his move to France, Herrera spent five successful seasons with Manchester United, becoming a key figure in midfield and winning the FA Cup in 2016. He began his professional career at Real Zaragoza before moving to Athletic Bilbao, where he established himself as one of La Liga’s most promising young midfielders.
During his time in Buenos Aires, Herrera made 29 appearances for Boca Juniors, scoring one goal. His time at the club was hampered by a series of injuries, limiting his impact on the pitch and preventing him from fully establishing himself in the starting eleven. Despite his efforts, he struggled to consistently replicate the form he had shown earlier in his career.
Herrera has also earned two caps for the Spanish national team, although his international appearances have been limited throughout his career. He now finds himself without a club, and his next move remains uncertain. The termination of his contract with Boca Juniors allows him to seek opportunities elsewhere, potentially returning to Europe or exploring options in other leagues. This move allows Herrera to find a club where he can secure more consistent playing time and contribute more effectively.
