Ander Herrera has completed a move back to Real Saragossa, the club where he began his professional career, after leaving Boca Juniors. The 36-year-old midfielder has signed a one-year contract with the Spanish club, despite their current status in the third tier of Spanish football. The transfer marks a return to his roots for Herrera, who departed Saragossa in 2004 to join Athletic Bilbao.
Herrera recently terminated his contract with Boca Juniors, bringing an end to his time in Argentina. His spell with the Buenos Aires club was hampered by recurring injuries, limiting his playing time and impact. Prior to joining Boca in 2022, Herrera enjoyed successful periods with both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, establishing himself as a key midfielder for both sides.
During his time at PSG, Herrera made 284 appearances across all competitions, including 33 Champions League matches, winning multiple Ligue 1 titles. He also featured prominently for Manchester United, playing 137 times and winning the FA Cup, League Cup, and Europa League. The Spaniard earned two caps for the Spanish national team during his career.
Real Saragossa were relegated to the Primera Federación, the third level of Spanish football, in the 2022-23 season. The club will be hoping Herrera’s experience and leadership qualities can help them achieve promotion back to La Liga 2. Despite the challenges ahead, Herrera expressed his desire to contribute to the club’s ambition of climbing back up the Spanish football pyramid. This move represents a significant signing for Real Saragossa as they aim to rebuild and regain their place in the higher divisions.
