Andrea Petagna is celebrating a return to Serie A with Monza, capping a season of personal and professional redemption for the striker. The 28-year-old, whose permanent move from Napoli was made official in 2022 following an initial loan, played a pivotal role in the club's successful campaign, finishing as their top scorer. His journey back to form followed what he described to La Gazzetta dello Sport as an immensely difficult year and a half, during which he dealt with his son's illness and a separation from his partner.
Petagna's turning point came on the pitch last November 30th, when he ended a 686-day goal drought with a strike against Juve Stabia. According to his own account, that goal arrived just two days after he was able to sleep at home with his son Leo for the first time, marking an emotional and sporting resurgence. The forward had previously gone 13 appearances without a goal during a loan spell at Cagliari in the 2022-23 season, managing just one strike in 18 total games for the Sardinian club.
His arrival at Monza was orchestrated by CEO Adriano Galliani, with the player becoming one of the club's most expensive signings, behind only Matteo Pessina and Andrea Colpani. Petagna came through the AC Milan academy, with former manager Massimiliano Allegri reportedly holding him in high regard, and he made his senior debut for the Rossoneri at 17. After spells at Atalanta and SPAL, where he first established himself as a reliable Serie A scorer, he moved to Napoli in 2020.
At Napoli, Petagna found playing time limited behind stars like Victor Osimhen and Dries Mertens, scoring nine goals in 68 appearances. His career had once attracted attention from major European clubs and included a senior Italy debut in 2017 under Giampiero Ventura, but his trajectory stalled in Naples. The move to Monza, initially a chance to reboot, became a battle for form and confidence until his pivotal mid-season breakthrough.
For Monza, securing Petagna's services permanently has now paid off, as his goals were instrumental in their promotion push. The club's investment in a player of his Serie A experience, who also offers a physical presence as a target forward, has proven astute. For Petagna, the promotion represents not just a sporting achievement but a personal triumph after a period of profound off-field challenges. His return to scoring and a key role suggests he will be a central figure as Monza prepares for its latest Serie A adventure.
