Andrew Robertson to leave Liverpool after nine years as Anfield exodus continues
Liverpool have confirmed the departure of defender Andrew Robertson, who will leave the club this summer when his contract expires. The 32-year-old Scottish left-back, a key figure in the club's recent successes, will depart as a free agent after nine seasons at Anfield.
Robertson, who joined from Hull City for a reported £8 million in 2017, made 267 appearances for the Reds, scoring 9 goals and providing 63 assists. The 32-year-old was a mainstay in a Liverpool side that won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup during his tenure. The club released an emotional video message from the player, in which he paid tribute to the club and its supporters.
"I’ve given my heart and soul to this club for nine years and, when I got my chance, I just wanted to make the people of this club and the supporters proud of the left-back they saw week in, week out," Robertson said in the video. "I know it's been an incredible journey, but I’m not done yet. This club means everything to me, the supporters mean everything to me. I feel I still owe them, and until my last day, I will give everything."
The 32-year-old’s playing time has diminished this season under new manager Arne Slot, with the defender starting just six Premier League matches. His departure follows the club's earlier announcement that Mohamed Salah will also leave at the end of the season, marking a significant summer of change at Anfield. Robertson’s leadership and consistent performances, particularly in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 title-winning campaigns, cemented his status as a modern Liverpool great. His overlapping runs and pinpoint deliveries from the left flank were a hallmark of manager Jürgen Klopp’s most successful teams.
Robertson's departure signals the end of a significant era at Liverpool, with the club now entering a major transitional phase under new sporting director Richard Hughes and head coach Arne Slot. The 30-year-old’s departure, alongside that of fellow veteran Joël Matip, frees up significant wage expenditure and a place in the squad as the new management team begins a major squad rebuild. The club is expected to be active in the transfer market to find a long-term successor at left-back, with Kostas Tsimikas and Joe Gomez providing immediate cover for the position.
Robertson’s next destination is not yet known, with clubs in Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer reportedly showing interest in the Scotland captain. His departure marks the end of a glorious chapter for both the player and the club, closing a nine-year chapter defined by relentless energy, pinpoint delivery, and a relentless will to win that made him a fan favorite and a symbol of the club’s modern renaissance.
