Angel Correa has returned to Argentina, joining River Plate from Tigres UANL in a deal worth approximately €13 million. The 31-year-old forward has signed a contract with River Plate that will run until the end of 2029, the club announced on Friday.
Correa departs Tigres after one season with the Monterrey-based club, where he played alongside André-Pierre Gignac. He reached the final of the CONCACAF Champions Cup in May, losing to Toluca on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Prior to his spell in Mexico, Correa spent ten seasons with Atlético Madrid, becoming a key player for the Spanish side.
He initially joined Atlético in 2015 from San Lorenzo, and went on to make 469 appearances for the club, scoring 88 goals. During his time in Madrid, Correa won a La Liga title in 2021, as well as a Europa League and a UEFA Super Cup, both in 2018. He was a member of the Argentina squad that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup, earning 28 caps and scoring three goals for his country.
The move to River Plate represents a homecoming for Correa, allowing him to play in his native Argentina after a successful career in Europe and Mexico. River Plate will be hoping Correa’s experience and goalscoring ability will bolster their attack as they compete domestically and in continental competitions. This transfer signals River Plate’s ambition to strengthen their squad with established international players.
