Anthony Lopes has signed for Angers following the expiration of his contract at FC Nantes, the Ligue 1 club confirmed on Monday. The Portuguese goalkeeper has agreed to a two-year deal with an additional year as an option.
Lopes, 35, arrives at Angers after two seasons with Nantes, which culminated in relegation from Ligue 1 last season. Prior to his time at Nantes, the shot-stopper spent the majority of his professional career with Olympique Lyonnais, where he developed through the youth ranks. This move will see Lopes embark on his 15th season in the French top flight, representing a third different club.
According to a club statement, Lopes has made 378 Ligue 1 appearances, keeping 123 clean sheets, and has also featured in 74 European matches. Angers’ decision to sign Lopes follows the end of Hervé Koffi’s loan spell, during which the goalkeeper impressed with 120 saves and a 78.3% save percentage.
Lopes’ experience will be invaluable as Angers look to solidify their position in Ligue 1. The club will be hoping he can provide stability and leadership in goal after a season of transition. His arrival represents a significant coup for Angers, bringing in a proven performer with a wealth of experience at the highest level. This transfer could also signal a shift in ambition for Angers, as they look to build a competitive squad capable of challenging higher up the table.
