Manchester United and Chelsea have entered the race to sign Sporting CP left-back Maxi Araujo, joining Arsenal as potential destinations for the 26-year-old, according to reports in Portugal.
Araujo enjoyed a productive 2025/26 season with Sporting, contributing seven goals and six assists across all competitions. His performances have drawn attention from several top European clubs, particularly after showcasing his abilities on the international stage at the World Cup this summer.
Reports from Portuguese outlet Record indicate that Manchester United sent scouts to watch Araujo during Uruguay’s recent 2-2 draw with Cape Verde. Chelsea are also monitoring the defender as they seek a replacement for Marc Cucurella, who recently joined Real Madrid for £52 million. Arsenal were previously linked with Araujo, making initial contact in April, but have since secured Piero Hincapie in a permanent deal.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was reportedly impressed by Araujo’s performances during Sporting’s Champions League quarter-final ties against his side. The player himself has acknowledged the possibility of a transfer, stating after Uruguay’s draw with Cape Verde, “I’m very happy at Sporting, but you never know what’s going to happen.”
Sporting are in a strong negotiating position, with Araujo having three years remaining on his current contract which includes an €80 million (£69.3m) release clause. He also recently expressed his enjoyment playing alongside teammate Ivan Fresneda, fueling speculation about a potential move where they could continue their partnership. The competition for Araujo’s signature is likely to intensify as clubs assess their options during the transfer window, and Sporting will be keen to secure a significant fee for one of their key players. His versatility, capable of playing as both a conventional left-back and a wing-back, makes him an attractive prospect for several Premier League teams.
