Liverpool have confirmed the departure of manager Arne Slot, effective immediately, as the club begins its search for a successor.
The announcement, made via a brief post on the club’s social media channels, stated Slot leaves having won one league title and with the club’s gratitude.
Slot’s exit comes after a season considered underwhelming for the Merseyside club, finishing fifth in the Premier League and being eliminated from the Champions League and FA Cup at the quarterfinal stages, alongside a fourth-round exit in the Carabao Cup.
Slot took over from Jurgen Klopp and secured a league title in his first season, but reports suggest a growing disconnect between the manager and the squad emerged, exemplified by an incident in December involving Mohamed Salah being left out of the Champions League squad following a reported disagreement.
According to reports in Italy, Andoni Iraola, previously the manager of Bournemouth, is now a leading candidate to replace Slot at Anfield. Iraola had recently departed Bournemouth, issuing a farewell message to the club, and was also linked with a move to Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen, though those deals now appear less certain.
Iraola was previously considered a target for Serie A side Milan as a potential replacement for Massimiliano Allegri, but his focus has seemingly shifted towards the Liverpool opportunity.
The quick resolution of the managerial situation at Liverpool will allow the club to focus on player recruitment ahead of next season, with Iraola’s potential appointment signaling a possible shift in tactical approach.
