Arne Slot warns PSG that Liverpool and Anfield 'will be ready' for Champions League decider
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has warned Paris Saint-Germain that his team and the Anfield crowd will be ready for the second leg of their Champions League tie, despite a two-goal deficit. The Reds host the French champions on Wednesday, having lost the first leg of the quarter-final tie 2-0 in Paris last week.
Speaking after Liverpool's 2-0 Premier League victory over Fulham on Saturday, Slot sought to build confidence ahead of the crucial European decider. He acknowledged the challenge of overturning a two-goal deficit against a PSG side that boasts Kylian Mbappé, who scored a brace in the first leg, but insisted his side would be prepared.
"We are in a better situation than we were two or three days ago, or a week ago, but things don't just become perfect overnight after a win," Slot told Sky Sports. The Dutch manager, who succeeded Jürgen Klopp last summer, acknowledged the physical toll of the schedule, with the second leg being Liverpool's third match in six days. However, he was adamant: "We will be ready for it, and I can tell you, Anfield will be ready too."
The 2-0 victory over Fulham at Anfield, which featured goals from Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz, provided a much-needed boost after a difficult run of form that had seen the Reds drop points in the league and fall behind in Europe. The win restored some confidence, but Slot was quick to temper expectations, noting that a single victory does not solve all issues.
Liverpool's recent form has been inconsistent, with the first-leg defeat in Paris and a subsequent league loss denting their momentum. The team's ability to overturn the deficit against a PSG side that has been dominant in Ligue 1 will be a significant test of their character and tactical discipline. The French champions, led by the in-form Mbappé, will be a formidable obstacle, even with the famous Anfield atmosphere behind the home side.
Historically, Liverpool have a strong record at Anfield in European competition, and the crowd is expected to play a significant role in the second leg. The club has a rich history of dramatic European comebacks, and Slot will be hoping to channel that spirit. The manager's comments suggest a focus on the physical and psychological readiness of his squad, acknowledging the challenge of playing three high-intensity matches in a short period.
For PSG, the two-goal cushion provides a significant advantage, but they will be wary of Liverpool's historic reputation for dramatic European nights. The outcome of this tie could define the season for both clubs, with Liverpool's Champions League hopes and Slot's first season in charge potentially hanging in the balance.
