Arsenal are mounting an “aggressive” push to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, with the player reportedly unwilling to extend his current contract, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The 26-year-old forward has informed Atletico of his desire to leave this summer, seeking a move to a club competing for major honours.
Alvarez enjoyed a productive season with Atletico, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists in 49 appearances across all competitions. He proved particularly effective in the Champions League, netting 10 goals in 15 matches, including a penalty against Arsenal during their semi-final clash, which the Gunners ultimately won. Despite his contributions, Alvarez appears set on a new challenge.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has identified Alvarez as a key attacking target following the club’s Premier League title win. Last summer, the Gunners invested £64 million in Viktor Gyokeres, but Arteta seemingly believes Alvarez would represent a significant upgrade and add further firepower to his squad. The North London club faces competition from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain for the Argentina international.
Chelsea have also expressed interest in Alvarez, however, their lack of Champions League football is considered a significant obstacle to securing his signature. Romano reports that Alvarez has “absolutely no intention” of signing a new deal with Atletico, effectively signalling his desire for a transfer. Atletico are expected to demand a fee of around €150 million (£130m) for their prized asset, who has been lauded by Diego Simeone as ‘one of the best strikers in the world.’
Arsenal are reportedly prepared to offer a substantial fee, and have even considered a cash-plus-player deal to lower the overall cost. Barcelona are also interested, but may struggle to meet Atletico’s valuation, potentially turning their attention to alternative Premier League forwards. The pursuit of Alvarez could be a defining move for Arsenal as they aim to build on their recent success and compete at the highest level.
