Arsenal have signed Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for a fee of €40 million, the club confirmed on Friday. The Greece international has signed a five-year contract with the Premier League side, bolstering their attacking options ahead of the new season.
Tzolis arrives at the Emirates Stadium after an impressive spell in Belgium, where he won the Jupiler Pro League’s “Player of the Season” award last term. Prior to joining Club Brugge, the forward’s career took a somewhat circuitous route, beginning with a move to Norwich City before a loan spell at Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Düsseldorf initially took Tzolis on loan from Norwich, subsequently making the transfer permanent for €3.5 million. His impact in the 2. Bundesliga was immediate, finishing as the league’s top scorer with 24 goals and adding a further 10 assists in just 37 games. However, Düsseldorf’s failure to achieve promotion to the Bundesliga necessitated a sale, with Club Brugge acquiring Tzolis for €6.5 million.
Despite his prolific form for Düsseldorf, which included a memorable panenka penalty in a DFB-Pokal shootout victory over St. Pauli, his time there was ultimately hampered by the club’s relegation to 3. Liga. According to Sky Sports, Fortuna Düsseldorf will not receive any financial benefit from Arsenal’s significant investment in Tzolis.
Tzolis’s arrival at Arsenal provides manager Mikel Arteta with another attacking threat, capable of playing in multiple positions. The Gunners are also reportedly pursuing RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, though sources indicate Paris Saint-Germain are currently leading the race for the young defender. This latest acquisition signals Arsenal’s continued ambition to compete at the highest level of European football.
