Arsenal’s chances of signing Julian Alvarez this summer have reportedly increased after Barcelona have cooled their interest in the Atletico Madrid striker, according to reports in Spain.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for Alvarez, with BBC Sport reporting a genuine interest, though a deal would likely require the sale of either Viktor Gyokeres or Kai Havertz to generate sufficient funds. Alvarez has established himself as one of the leading strikers in world football, making him a highly sought-after target.
Barcelona had initially identified Alvarez as their primary target to replace Robert Lewandowski, who is expected to depart the club. However, SPORT reports that Barcelona now believe they are unable to meet Atletico Madrid’s valuation of the player.
Atletico are believed to want at least €150million (£130m) for the 26-year-old Alvarez, a fee that presents a significant obstacle for Barcelona given their ongoing financial difficulties. As an alternative, Barcelona have turned their attention to Chelsea’s Joao Pedro, according to The Athletic.
However, Barcelona’s pursuit of Pedro is also facing complications, with SPORT reporting that the Brazilian is likely to remain at Chelsea if new manager Xabi Alonso wishes to retain his services. Alonso was recently appointed Chelsea manager on a four-year contract, beginning July 1st.
Pedro has enjoyed an impressive debut season at Chelsea, scoring 20 goals, and is also considered one of the world’s best forwards. Barcelona’s sporting director Deco was reportedly in attendance at the FA Cup final to scout Pedro, but Chelsea’s potential reluctance to sell complicates matters.
Both Alvarez and Pedro will have the opportunity to showcase their abilities on the international stage at this summer’s World Cup. Alvarez will represent Argentina as they attempt to defend their title, while Pedro will aim to lead Brazil to their sixth World Cup victory. Alvarez has scored 20 goals in all competitions for Atletico this season, reaching the Copa del Rey final and Champions League semi-finals.
This development potentially clears a path for Arsenal to make a serious move for Alvarez, although the financial commitment required will still be substantial.
