Arsenal have made contact with Atlético Madrid regarding a potential summer transfer for forward Julián Alvarez, according to reports in Spain. Multiple sources within Atlético suggest the 26-year-old Alvarez is considering leaving the club, though no formal decision has been made.
While Alvarez has not publicly expressed a desire to depart, Cadena SER reports that Atlético directors ‘suspect’ he is planning an exit and are aware of ‘movements’ from his representatives. Alvarez’s entourage has reportedly held negotiations with Barcelona and made contact with both Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.
Alvarez joined Atlético from Manchester City in 2024 for a fee of €75 million and has become a key player for Diego Simeone’s side. This season, he has scored 20 goals in all competitions, including one against Arsenal in the Champions League semi-final. His performances have established him as one of La Liga’s most potent attackers.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen to add a high-profile attacking player to his squad, viewing Alvarez as a top target. However, Alvarez is reportedly ‘not keen’ on a return to the Premier League, and Barcelona are also interested in securing his services as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. The financial situation at Barcelona may prove to be a significant obstacle to any potential deal.
Atlético are expected to demand a transfer fee exceeding €100 million for Alvarez, a figure they acknowledge may be difficult to achieve. The club will only consider offers once Alvarez formally communicates his intentions. PSG, managed by Luis Enrique, are also monitoring the situation, potentially creating a bidding war for the Argentine international. A competitive transfer saga is anticipated this summer as clubs vie for Alvarez’s signature.
Alvarez’s potential arrival at Arsenal would significantly bolster their attacking options and provide a focal point for Arteta’s evolving system. His departure from Atlético would leave a void in their forward line, requiring Simeone to seek a suitable replacement.
