Arsenal lead Liverpool and Man City in €100m race for Leverkusen's Kofane
Arsenal are leading the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane, according to reports, but face significant competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester City. The 19-year-old forward has emerged as a primary target for Mikel Arteta, who is seeking to bolster his attacking options ahead of the summer transfer window.
Kofane, a Cameroon international, has scored seven goals in 40 appearances for Leverkusen since joining from Spanish second-tier side Albacete last summer. His performances, particularly in a Champions League last-16 tie against Arsenal, have placed him on the radar of several top European clubs. According to the player’s agent, Eric Depolo, Arsenal’s interest is concrete. "Arsenal’s interest is genuine," Depolo told Daily Arsenal. "The manager likes him very much. There is contact between me and Arsenal."
However, the Gunners face a major battle to secure his signature. According to reports from TEAMtalk, both Liverpool and Manchester City have now entered the race for the striker’s signature and have made contact to signal their interest. The player’s agent also named Chelsea, Newcastle, Everton, Brentford, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich as other interested clubs.
A potential transfer is expected to command a significant fee, with Kofane’s agent valuing him at €100 million. In his public comments, Depolo was bullish about his client’s valuation, stating, "He is a €100 million player. With Kofane, Arsenal will have a top striker for the next 10 years." The agent also suggested Arsenal may hold an advantage in the race, in part due to the presence of French-Cameroonian defender William Saliba in the Arsenal squad. "I think it is too early to say who is leading the race, but due to the fact that the player speaks Spanish, like Mikel Arteta, and that William Saliba is originally from Cameroon, I would say Arsenal are in pole position," Depolo said.
A move to Manchester City would likely see Kofane serve as an understudy to Erling Haaland, following the departure of Julian Alvarez. Liverpool’s interest is more complex, as the club invested heavily in forwards Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak last summer. The arrival of Kofane could place Ekitike’s position at Anfield in serious jeopardy, with the Frenchman’s form having dipped after a strong start to his Liverpool career. Isak, meanwhile, has struggled with injuries during his debut season.
Kofane’s agent has been vocal in promoting his client, describing him as the best under-21 striker in Europe. "Right now, he is the best U21 striker in Europe and the most complete one," Depolo claimed. "He has speed, technique, defends very well and is strong in the air. It is very difficult to find all these attributes in one striker." Arsenal’s need for a striker is heightened by the potential departure of Gabriel Jesus, who has been linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium this summer. The pursuit of Kofane signals a clear intent to reinforce their forward line with a young, high-potential talent, but they face a major battle with their domestic rivals to secure his signature.
