Arsenal are preparing a significant bid for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, according to TEAMtalk. The player’s representatives have reportedly informed the Spanish club of his desire to depart this summer, a sentiment seemingly acknowledged by Atletico manager Diego Simeone who suggested Alvarez has already decided on his future.
While reports in Spain indicate Alvarez’s preference is a move to Barcelona, doubts persist regarding the Catalan club’s financial capacity to meet Atletico’s demands, believed to be in excess of €100 million. As a result, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are now considered the most likely destinations, with both clubs signalling their willingness to satisfy Atletico’s valuation.
Separately, Manchester United are reportedly close to agreeing a deal with Newcastle for midfielder Sandro Tonali, as claimed by Tuttomercatoweb. Arsenal had also expressed interest in the Italy international, but United appear to be leading the race. Newcastle are seeking a fee of at least €80 million, potentially rising above €100 million, which proved a deterrent for Juventus who have withdrawn from the competition.
Arsenal co-chairman Josh Kroenke has affirmed continued investment in the squad following their recent Premier League title win. Speaking at Selhurst Park after the trophy presentation, Kroenke stated, “The business never stops.” He highlighted the need to proactively address potential strengthening from rival teams and indicated ongoing discussions regarding improvements both on and off the pitch, acknowledging the complexities presented by the upcoming World Cup.
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville echoed Kroenke’s sentiment, suggesting Arsenal still require additional depth in specific positions. Neville questioned the need for backup options to Viktor Gyokeres at centre-forward and further reinforcement in central midfield, particularly as cover for Declan Rice or Martin Zubimendi. He acknowledged the existing strength of the Arsenal squad but pointed to areas where further additions could be beneficial.
