Arsenal have played down reports suggesting they are in advanced talks to sign AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone, despite the player reportedly favouring a move to the Emirates Stadium. The news comes amid speculation in Italian media outlets claiming Arsenal have already agreed personal terms with the 25-year-old.
Roma are believed to be seeking a fee of at least €50 million (£43.1m, $56.7m) for Kone, who is currently participating in the 2026 World Cup with France. Reports from Corriere della Sera earlier this month indicated initial discussions had taken place between Arsenal and Kone’s representatives. Tottenham Hotspur have also reportedly registered their interest in the player, though Kone’s preference is to join Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Quotidiano Sportivo reported that Kone views a move to the reigning English champions and Champions League finalists as a significant personal challenge, one that could elevate his profile further. The report suggests Roma are prepared to sell Kone as part of a summer overhaul, recognising his increasing value due to his performances at the World Cup.
However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano stated on X (formerly Twitter) that Arsenal are not currently pursuing Kone as a target. Romano cited reporting from Matteo Moretto to support his claim that the club is not actively engaged in negotiations. Kone joined Roma in 2024 and is contracted to the Italian club until 2029, having made 82 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing six assists. This apparent disconnect between the player’s wishes and Arsenal’s current transfer strategy suggests a potential impasse in any future negotiations. A move to Arsenal would offer Kone a platform to compete at the highest level of European football.
